EJOT FDS®

The extruding screw for high-strength joints

Due to its good handling and processing characteristics, steel is still the dominating material in the sheet metal manufacturing industry. It is increasingly competing with specifically lighter materials though, such as aluminium. Against this background the steel industry has developed a number of new sheet metal materials, which are characterised by very high strength with very good recasting characteristics at the same time.

EJOT FDS® – The secure fastener for steel and aluminium joints

In addition to cold-formed, soft steel as a typical deep-drawn material, especially the micro-alloyed fine sheets and multi phase steels should be mentioned, which have a special importance in the area of high-strength sheet metal joints. Of all the aluminium wrought alloys, for example in the automotive field, the mainly used material is the thermal temperable aluminium alloy in addition to the not temperable. The optimal utilisation of the respective characteristics of these steel and aluminium materials often requires a rethinking in the commonly used joining technology, especially when joining the different materials together.

Here the flow drilling EJOT FDS® screw opens up new possibilities. Due to the increased thread engagement in the formed extrusion a high strength joint can be gained. The female metric thread, formed without chips during the insertion process, is true to gauge and therefore a standard metric screw can be used for repairs. Because of the engagement of multiple threads that are free from play the joint is water and gas tight and can transmit high shearing strengths as well as high pull-out forces. The produced heat during the flow-drilling is harmless since is stays below the recrystallisation temperature of the respective mating material. Flow-drilling is thus part of the low heat joining methods. The low rest heat is sufficient to shrink the formed extrusion onto the screw thread after the assembly, which guarantees a high dynamic stability. In this way additional securing elements, e.g. adhesives, can be omitted.

Since component preparations like drilling or punching are not necessary, tolerance issues and the lining up of clearance holes are things of the past. The possibility of one sided assembly with FDS® makes an installation into hollow profiles possible without bracing.

The EJOT FDS® screw is used in the serial production of various vehicles. Amongst others in the car body and wheel arch assembly, as well as the fastening of brake and fuel lines.
